1982 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ45 Troopy
A yellow 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ45 Troopy photographed from full desert portraits down to the details, including its long body, white roof, round headlights, rear cargo area, side benches, manual cockpit, engine bay, and four-wheel-drive hardware.
Photographs built around the utility of a classic 4x4
The FJ45 Troopy has a very different character from the sports cars and luxury classics I photographed in this collection. Its design is almost entirely about utility: a tall, boxy body, long wheelbase, large side windows, simple round headlights, exposed hinges and hardware, and a cabin that looks built to be used rather than decorated.
The shoot covered that character from both sides. I photographed the complete vehicle against the Tucson desert and mountains, then moved into the details that make the Troopy distinctive: the Toyota grille, Land Cruiser badging, split rear doors, long cargo floor, opposing side benches, manual controls, engine bay, rear accessories, and suspension and undercarriage components.
